Betting On Baseball (MLB)
May 9th, 2009When you’re betting on Major League Baseball most people typically think that you pick one team to win, which is correct, but there are also a lot of other bets you can make on baseball. I feel it’s important to anyone who bets on baseball to understand the different types of wagers you can make so that you can mix them around to see where you do well in. We’re going to look at all of the different wagers you can make on a single baseball game in this guide.
Straight Wager – Moneyline
A straight baseball betting wager is simply when you pick one team to beat another team by one point or more. There are no ties in baseball so you don’t need to worry about any ties, you just need to pick who will win the game. This is the most common bet and is probably the simplest best for most people to predict.
Straight Wager – Run Line
This is the same bet as above except for one difference which is the spread. In a run line wager if you pick the favourite they need to win by 2 or more, and if you pick the underdog then the team can lose by 1 and you still would win.
Straight Wager – Over/Under
The over/under in a game can be difficult to predict so I suggest picking your spots wisely when betting on game totals. The sportsbook you use will set a over/under line and you need to predict whether the game will be under or over the posted total. For instance, a game might be -8.5 which means you need 9 runs or more to win the over, and 8 runs or less to win the under.
Straight Wager – Team Totals
Betting on team totals is ideal if you follow certain teams and now how well they can hit against a certain team. In this wager you’re only betting on one team to go over/under on the posted total and not both teams, which is important to remember. If the Yankees have a team total posted of -4.5 then they would need 5 runs in the game to win the over and 4 runs or less to win the under.
Straight Wager – Player Props
For certain games most online baseball betting sportbooks will post some player props which are pretty easy to predict. The prop bet could be for example who will have the most hits between Manny Ramirez and Alex Rios in the game. If you like Ramirez will get more hits then Rios in the game then you would pick Ramirez. There are different bets in this category such as most home runs, most RBI’s, most runs, etc.
Straight Wager – Hits + Runs + Errors
This is a fun wager you can make on games you’re watching, but for the most part you’re going to be guessing on this type of wager. The goal is to predict whether the total hits, runs and errors will go over or under the posted total. An example would be -27.5 which would mean you need 28 or more hits, runs and errors in the game between both teams to win the over and less then 27 for the under.
